Come to find out, I have a talent for portraiture in addition to other photo-realistic subjects.
I work in graphite and am available for commissioned projects.

Commissioned Projects

I prefer to work from photographic references as opposed to live sittings. For one thing, who has time to sit for a portrait these days? For another, it is tedious, difficult and rather boring for a model to hold the same pose for long periods of time.

Unfortunately, not every photograph will provide the detail and lighting that a quality portrait requires. I am happy to provide my skills as a photographer to assist you in achieving what I need to provide the best outcome for your commissioned project; including evaluating your photos and/or taking additional photos.

You will notice that all the clothing has been simplified and I have not included backgrounds. I have done this intentionally to draw your eye to the important part of the drawing: the subject(s). It's not that I can't include the patterns and texture in the cloth (note the frayed sleeve on the Egg drawing) or the background (see the Great Heron drawing in the Limited Edition prints); I simply choose not to.

The price of a commissioned project depends on the size of the finished piece, the number of subjects in the piece and how much research/prep time is required. I am happy to provide you a quote, free of charge.

EggInHand-Commission EggInHand-OrigPhoto

In the same concept of saving the first dollar made by a business and framing it, this commemorates the first egg laid on the farm.

The original drawing took 22 hours to complete, is 10x12 and fits into an 12x16 inch mat*. Cost was $150.

MothersDayPortrait

A Mothers Day Gift. A composite from multiple images.

The original drawing took 26 hours to complete, is 10x8 and fits into an 11x14 inch mat*. Cost was $250.

Anniversary50th

Celebrating 50 Years of Marriage. The photo had this couple sitting in chairs a distance from each other at an angle, making the man appear smaller. I enlarged the man somewhat so when they are next to each other they have the correct proportions.

The original drawing took 22 hours to complete, is 20x16 inches and fits into a 30x20 inch mat*. Cost was $250.

parents of the groom

Parents of the Groom. The photo had the groom standing between the parents. This is one of the wonderful things about drawing, I am able to change the composition seamlessly.

The original drawing took 18 hours to complete, is 10x8 and fits into an 11x14 inch mat*. Cost was $200.

Grammy. The photo this image was drawn from had horrible glare reflections in both of the glass lens. I was able to use other photos of the woman and family members to recreate her eyes.

The original drawing took 22 hours to complete, is 10x8 and fits into an 11x14 inch mat*. Cost was $200.

life-size couple

Life-size Couple. This was a surprise anniversary gift and it was drawn from a single print of the couple photographed at a distance. Luckily it was a digital image in high resolution so I was able to manipulate it to enlarge their faces enough to work from it without any additional images. However, the earrings were blown away due to the flash and were important enough that the lady took separate pictures of them so I could reproduce them.

The original drawing took 47 hours to complete, is 16x20 and was custom framed. Cost was $500.

mandy

Mandy. Drawn from a photo that had some blurriness, cut off feet, tail and pillow; but the only image available. This meant searches to find similar dogs on the internet so I could fill in the missing areas in a way that would match the photo and a pillow as well.

The original drawing took 22 hours to complete, is 14x8 and was custom framed. Cost was $300.

*Unlike a photo where you want the mat to hide the edge, a drawing is benefitted by extra space before the mat. It is important to mat quality images (whether photo or drawing) to keep the glass from touching the paper.

Moonflower Trio. Limited Edition Print of 200. Paper size is 9x12 and image fits into an 8x10 inch mat*.

Moonflowers bloom at night and close up soon after the sun rises, so getting a photo of them in and of itself is an accomplishment. They are highly fragrant and the leaves are velvet to the touch. These beauties were in my very weed-filled garden and were thriving! The lovely thing about drawing is that you can make changes in the process. There was a stray weed crossing the top blossom that was very distracting in the photo, so I simply did not draw that; thereby retaining the beauty of the flower and getting rid of the distraction.

I entered this drawing in a local competition and the person receiving the entry thought it was a photograph… what a lovely complement! By the way, it received a first-place ribbon.

The original drawing took 25 hours to complete and is part of my private collection.

Great Heron. Limited Edition Print of 200. Paper size is 16x12 and image fits a 14x11 inch mat*.

I saw this beautiful heron across the lake while I was photographing a lake-side wedding and couldn't resist capturing its image. As good as my telephoto lens is, the details of the bird did not enlarge well so I used photos I found on-line as references to put those lost details into the drawing. I also changed the composition of the shoreline to bring more depth and interest into the drawing.

I believe it is the reflections in the water that really make this image.

The original drawing took 30 hours to complete and is part of my private collection.

My First Water Toy. Limited Edition Print of 50. Paper size is 20x16 and the 13x11.5 inch image works best in a custom mat of 15x13 inches*.

This is one of my all-time favorite images of my first Newfoundland Dog: Monte. We gave him a towing knot as a puppy so he would learn to love it when it came time to train... it worked.

In this image, I find the grass and dandelion brings a bit of whimsy to the composition. And who can resist a close-up of a puppy happily chewing on a toy.

The original drawing took 18 hours to complete and is part of my private collection.

Honeybee Collecting Pollen. Limited Edition Print of 200. Paper size is 9x12 and image fits into an 8x10 inch mat*.

I drew this as a fundraiser for our local beekeeping association. That means the bee is the important part and the rest is just somewhere for the bee to be (pun intended). So while the bee is photo-realistic, the flower is obviously not.

The original drawing took 15 hours to complete and is being enjoyed by a beekeeper somewhere.
